PILOT LICENCE QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Obtaining Your Recreational Pilot Licence in Australia
As long as you are fit enough to hold a current Drivers Licence – you are never to old to fly RAA-us. If you are over 75yrs you must produce a doctors certificate verifying you are fit and able to drive a car.
You will normally spend around 2 hours with us. Your time will be split between a 20-30min briefing, aircraft pre flight check, approx 45min flying and finally a debrief and video transfer at the end of your flight. You only pay for the time in the Aircraft - pro rata engine time. Here are our flying rates.
See latest Learn to Fly Pricing here. We only charge for flight time, We do not charge for briefings, landing fees or video footage – no hidden costs. Recreational Aviation Australia has yearly pilot certificate/membership fees - click here. Suggested text books and log books are here.
There is a minimum of 20hrs to obtain your licence – however there is a certain standard of competency which must be reached. Whilst it can be done in the 20hrs, we have found that it usually takes a little longer.
There are 4 multiple choice exams to pass before you can take your final 'Licence Flight Test'. Whilst much of the information is discussed in your briefings, there is further theory which you will need to study in preparation for these exams. We have a Theory Book available for purchase which we feel best covers all you need to know.
We have had many students who have done this. Depending of how far through your training you got (ie actually obtained a licence, went Solo, exams passed etc). All your logged hours will still count. Training in the Foxbat will start with a Famil flight so you can get used to the plane, and we can see where you are at. From there, we will tailor make lessons to get you up to speed with the RAA-us Syllabus and also the Foxbat. Well done for coming back – its a box that still needs 'ticking'
A Trial Instruction Flight, in the form of a Gift Voucher is perfect for this. It is exactly that – a 'Trial Flight'. He will get to have a hands on experience flying our dual controlled Foxbat, where he will be encouraged to do as much of the flying as he feels comfortable with. There is absolutely no pressure to continue on after this flight if it does not suit. Whilst we absolutely love flying and it is our passion – we also understand that it is not everyone’s cup of tea. At least he will have had the experience – and also video footage to look back over. The Gift Voucher is also transferable to another person if required :-)
Our training is conducted in a dual control Foxbat A22LS, which has excellent visibility and performance. If You have your own aircraft please reach out to discuss the potential to train in that aircraft. Contact Us Here
When you pass your Licence Test you are now able to fly within a 25 nautical mile radius of the initial place of departure. There is a Navigation endorsement you must pass to enable you to fly anywhere in Australia. Our Foxbat is also able to be hired – so you don't need to own a plane to enjoy your new found freedom, just book a time with us.
When you learn to fly in a Light Sports Recreational Recreational Aircraft – you learn flying skills that will take you anywhere. Because of our light weight and low wing loading, our planes need to be 'FLOWN'! You will learn more about aircraft handling and save a lot of money by starting in our aricraft. Hours flown with us transfer towards PPL and CPL. Many pilots we train go on to fly in the RAAF, Commercial Jets or keep enjoying flying for Sport
Yes of course. Whilst the average person is able to train on the weekends or their spare time, we also acknowledge that some people just wish 'to get on with it'. Intensive training is available most definitely. Maybe you have holidays, long service leave, retired – whatever – we can train 7 days a week, one on one (weather may play an issue occasionally of course). We can also help with accommodation if you are from interstate.
