LEARN TO FLY WITH SKYFLYTE AT WYNYARD or DEVONPORT
If you have always dreamed of learning to fly, a fun and cost effective way is available at our office at Wynyard Aeroclub (WAC) in Tasmania’s scenic North West, or our office at Devonport in Tasmania's Central North.
Chief Flying Instructor Peter Reed has been operating flying schools for over 35 years. The school 'Skyflyte' operates under the rules of Recreational Aviation Australia and uses modern Light Sport Aircraft. Aircraft used are the Foxbat A22LS (nose wheel) and the Lightwing GR912 (taildragger). Both are side by side, two seaters with dual controls.
For the uninitiated, a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF) can be taken in either plane for $125. This flight is approximately half an hour in the plane and starts with a basic briefing on the ground about what to expect. You are encouraged the take the controls and fly the plane during the flight or you can just take in the local scenery. This time counts towards your Pilot Certificate should you continue on with learning to fly.
All training flights including your first TIF are filmed by a GoPro located in the cockpit of the plane, patched in with sound – at no extra cost. This means that all lessons can be reviewed by our students at their leisure, and we are finding that is a very valuable training aid. (Please bring along a memory stick or external hard drive with at least 8 gig free space to each lesson)
Within three hours of flight training, or 90 days, you will need to get your Student Pilot Certificate and RAAus membership. This will cost $285.00 pa ($189 for U/18) and includes complementary E News, member liability insurance (refer RAAus Website), operations manual and $250,000 3rd party insurance. You must be at least 15yrs old before you can 'go solo', (parental permission required if under 18yrs), and have a health standard the same as that required to drive a motor vehicle. The minimum time is 20 hours to achieve your Pilot Certificate but the average is longer to reach the required level of safety. A further minimum of 10 hours dual and 2hrs solo (total 12hrs) cross country training can see your 25 nautical mile distance limit lifted so you can explore further afield. You will be able to take a friend flying with you after you have10 hours in command and pass a flight test with CFI. Once you have obtained your Pilot Certificate, the Foxbat is available to hire. If you wish to obtain a General Aviation License, the hours done with us transfer directly towards the requirements.
Training costs for both aircraft are $260 per hr for dual training and supervised solo hire (pre-certificate). The Foxbat is then available to hire dry for $150 per hr once you have obtained your Pilot Certificate.
Students who find Wynyard the most convenient location for their flying training will need to join Wynyard Aeroclub after your first lesson. The club publishes a monthly newsletter and members own and fly a variety aircraft most of which are housed in the club’s own hangars. Monthly bbq and social occassions also.
Students who wish to fly out of Devonport, can do so from our own office at the Airport. There is an Aeroclub nearby, which we recommend you join.
As we operate between 2 venues, bookings are required.
Our passion is flying, we welcome the opportunity to share with you.
